The Year 10 Twenty/20 team journeyed to Victor Harbor on Friday 1st March to play in the second round match against Victor Harbor High.
Victor Harbor won the toss and decided to bat. The situation was looking grim for Wirreanda as the hosts score reached 57 without loss in the 12th over. Liam Hennessy decided to switch from a seamers attack to spin with Zac Young bowling orthodox left arm spinners with the slight breeze at one end, and Liam himself bowling into the breeze. The move proved to be a master stroke with the run rate slowing down, and both bowlers taking three wickets each. Zac finished with 3/21 from his four overs, while Liam took 3/29 from his spell. Victor Harbor ended their innings on 8/108 after their 20 overs.
Shaun Johns and Liam Hennessy took on the Victor Harbor bowlers with a good deal of confidence and raced to 66 from 12 overs with the game in total control. However the dismissal of Shaun brought on a mini collapse with 4 wickets being lost for only 15 and the run rate being severely compromised. With twelve balls to go, Wirreanda were on 6/95 and required a further 14 runs for victory. Seven runs were scored from the 19th over. Ashley Sampson hit the first ball of the 20th to mid-wicket for four. A run was taken from the second delivery. Jackson Millard, playing in his first game for the school, attempted a suicidal run and Ashley Sampson was run out for 16. Zac Young, who earlier bowled beautifully as well as taking two catches, strode to the crease and played his first ball to square leg for one run. The scores were tied with two deliveries in the match left. Jackson was on strike and hit the ball high over wide long on for a four to give Wirreanda victory by 3 wickets. It was a climatic end to a fantastic game of cricket that ebbed and flowed the entire match. Both teams should be proud of their endeavours throughout the match.
James Shugg made his debut as scorer during this game.
