On Friday 17th February, the Open team travelled to Woodcroft College for their first round game. Ryan Smallman, who was captaining the team, won the toss and sent Woodcroft into bat. The decision appeared to have paid off when Josh Golding took two wickets in four balls to have Woodcroft at 2/27. Thereafter, the wickets were much harder to come by and Woodcroft were all out for 170. Daniel Lee, who nearly claimed a hat-trick, had a good day with the ball and finished with 4/20 from 5.4 overs. Joel Handreck, making a comeback to school cricket, had figures of 2/5. The other wicket taker was Angus Lock who took 1/16, while Josh DeHeus was involved in a run out with some fine fielding.
Daniel Lee and Ryan Smallman were able to start the innings off in a positive manner as they took the score to 53 from 13 overs before Ryan was caught attempting to increase the scoring rate. Daniel batted very well to score 46, giving him a very good match. All other batsmen struggled to keep the score moving at the required rate, and Wirreanda were 9/98 when Adrian Hodge joined Brock Syme in the 30th over with ten remaining. They chose to play the good ball safely and dispose of the bad ones for runs. In the end they managed a creditable partnership of 41 to leave their team 31 runs short of the required total, and finish at 9/139 after 40 overs.
The game was played in a really good spirit by both teams with a lot of the boys playing with or against each other for club teams. Aaron Bennett was the scorer for this match and is to be thanked for his efforts.
