LeFevre High and Ocean View College came to Wirreanda High to play Super 8 games on Tuesday 22nd October. All teams were aware that rain was threatening to wash out play at any stage during the day.
In the first game, captain Jake Cuming won the toss and elected to field first. After their ten overs, LeFevre finished on 4/49 with Jake being the highest wicket taker with two, while Connor Panozzo and Bodie Sowter took one each.
Wirreanda batted cautiously during their overs after Zach Young opened the batting. He remained at the crease until the very end for a well-made 27 not out and was there for an exciting finish when the 8 runs were scored off the last over to win.
The second match was played between LeFevre and Ocean View. Ocean View made 4/59 and LeFevre finished on 5/49 after their allotted overs. This set up a 'mini grand final' between Wirreanda and Ocean View.
Zach Young took over the captaincy for the next game and also won the toss, electing to field. Ocean View started their innings off in a steady manner, but the introduction of Michael Hirschausen into the attack changed the game dramatically. He claimed two wickets with successive balls and narrowly missed claiming a third during his over when a relatively easy catch was put down. This minor setback did not impact too much on the team as in the following over, Michael took a magnificent catch off Jackson Willoughby.
Ocean View finished their innings on 5/48 with Michael running out a batsman with the last ball.
During the change of innings, the boys were confident of chasing down the Ocean View score. However the innings began in a disastrous manner with Michael being run out and Jake Cuming caught off the very next ball.
There was a fight back by Jackson Willoughby and Connor Panozzo, before the rain came down for the last two overs. The game continued with Wirreanda reaching 6/27 at the finish.
Congratulations to Ocean View who move on to the next round, and well done to the Wirreanda team for putting in a strong effort. A special mention must go to Michael Hirschausen who was outstanding in his efforts.
