Wirreanda Secondary School hosted St John's Grammar School for the fourth game of the Tanner-Watson series on Wednesday 14th December 2016.

St John's won the toss and elected to bat first. After being injured in the previous match, Gypsy Schirmer was able to open the bowling with Lachlan Prior. However, the St John's batsmen were difficult to dismiss and the first wicket fell at 36 when Lachlan Prior broke through with a confident LBW appeal. Captain Tyson Craigie made several innovative bowling changes and produced a master-stroke by introducing first time player Cooper O'Reilly into the attack in the eleventh over. Cooper then broke a 27 run partnership when Tyson Craigie took a good catch at mid on. Four balls later Spiro Haratsaris took a tricky catch at backward square leg. Lachlan Prior 2/18, Gypsy Schirmer 1/20 and Tyson Cragie 1/16 had productive bowling spells to had reduce the score to 8/106 after 20 overs. Mitchell Sands produced the fielding highlight of the innings when he threw an accurate ball to Tyler Cuming for a very close run out.

The run chase began slowly with Tyson Craigie and Angus Somerville adding 29 for the third wicket. Tyson was unfortunately run out with his score on 9 and Tyler Cuming took up the challenge of giving Wirreanda the advantage by hitting two big shots. However he fell badly on his foot while running between wickets and had to retire on 5 with the team score on 46 after 12 overs. Mitchell Sands came to the wicket to join Angus Somerville with 61 runs required off 48 deliveries. They both batted solidly putting on 42 runs with Mitchell being run out from the last ball of the innings for 13. Angus batted beautifully to finish on 28 not out. Wirreanda were 4/88 after their 20 overs.

It was a good fightback from the team who regularly put themselves into a winning position, but fell short by 18 runs at the end of the game. Good contributions for the team were made in the field by Caleb Addison, Rajbir Singh, Aurora Choat and Jayden Hoffmann. A special mention must go to Mohit Khanna who umpired the game and to Matt McLean who scored for the first time.
