An enthusiastic group of cricketers made the short journey to Woodcroft College on Thursday 9th February to play in the first round of the Year 8-9 Knockout Competition.

Given that the temperature was higher than usual, the game was reduced to 20 overs per side with drink breaks scheduled every five overs and fielding rotations made every three overs to give students extra rest.

A new method of captaincy was introduced for this game in which four different students captained the team for five overs each. Angus Somerville won the toss and decided that Wirreanda should field. Lachlan Prior and Gypsy Schirmer bowled very tightly in the first four overs and restricted Woodcroft to 6 runs. After 10 overs the Woodcroft score crept up to 1/34 with debutant Josh De Roode taking his first wicket. Gypsy Schirmer was constantly managing and encouraging the team in her spell as captain. Jayden Hoffman took over for the next session and the bowlers allowed Woodcroft to only score 25 runs in that period of play. Josh De Roode bowled very well and Jayden contributed with some accurate bowling in his spell. There were also two run outs during this stage of the game with clever fielding from Spiro Haratsaris and Jayden himself. Tyson Craigie was given the difficult task of captaining the last five overs and did well to restrict Woodcroft to 3/90 after their allocated 20 overs.

Tyson Craigie and Tylor Cuming were confident in their opening partnership of 23, but with three quick wickets Wirreanda suddenly found themselves on the back foot. Lachlan Prior and Ty Doyle made important runs in the middle part of the innings to keep the team within reach of Woodcroft’s score. After 15 overs Wirreanda were 6/52 with Ty Doyle and Josh De Roode looking to score some quick runs. However there was a disastrous collapse and the team were all out for 53.

Despite their inability to win the game, it was played in a very good spirit.

A special mention needs to go to Devin Edwards with umpired and Matt McLean who scored.
