SHAUN TANNER TY WATSON TWENTY/20 CHALLENGE 2017

MONDAY 11th DECEMBER

Matt McLean, Hayden Newman, Llewelyn Wisman, Nick Wilden, Jayden Prime, Ryan Fitzpatrick,

Jaxon Newman, Dawson Horrell, Josh De Roode, Riley Baxter, Jesse Meekins.

The sixth edition of the Shaun Tanner-Ty Watson Twenty/20 Challenge was played on Monday 11th December at Wirreanda Secondary School.

St John’s Grammar School batted first after captain Josh De Roode sent them into bat. Hayden Newman was the first to break through when Llewelyn Wisman took a smart catch at point. The second wicket fell with Riley Baxter taking a juggling catch at fine leg off Ryan Fitzpatrick, both of whom were playing in their first game for the school. Josh De Roode was fielding at short cover when he held on to a smart catch to give Nick Wilden his first school wicket. The fourth wicket also involved Josh De Roode taking a good catch, but this time it was off the bowling of Riley Baxter who was really unlucky not to claim a second wicket in his over. He was called for bowling a waist height no ball. Hayden Newman took the final wicket in the innings leaving Wirreanda 92 runs to win the game.

After Jaxon Newman was dismissed for 2, Josh De Roode and Dawson Horrell built a strong partnership that took the total  to 44. Josh pushed the ball through the gaps for handy singles, while Dawson played a number of beautiful on drives before he was out for 20 runs. When Hayden Newman came to the crease he knew that he had to increase the run rate, but his endeavour came to an end with the first ball of the 20th over after he was caught for 27 very useful runs. With 9 runs still required from 5 balls, Josh De Roode and Llewelyn Wisman ended the innings 5 runs short of the total required. Josh carried his bat to be 23 not out.

The finish to the game was exciting as any result was possible right up until the final ball. Both teams played the match in a good spirit.

Thank you to Matt McLean who did a fantastic job scoring.
