The Open Boys team played their second round game against Aberfoyle Park High on Monday 26th February at Wirreanda.
After losing the toss, Wirreanda were invited to bat first. Zack Robertson and Mohit Khanna opened the batting and put on a solid 23 runs before Mohit was first out for 3. Josh Spall hit his first ball for 4, but he played an uncharacteristic shot to be dismissed for 7. Tylor Mills came in, and for the second time in his school career played an important supporting role adding 102 with Zack Robertson. Zack was third out for a brilliant 113 in 87 balls with the total on 142. Thereafter, Ryan Parry(13), Alex Hennessy(6) and Christiaan De Roode(6) all played small cameos to take the Wirreanda score to 8/171 after 37 overs.
There was an early breakthrough by Ryan Parry in the Aberfoyle Park innings, followed by a controversial decision in which all fielders were confident in their appeal against the other opening batsman, only to have the umpire turn the appeal down.
The game was developing into one in which both sides had a chance of victory as each team fought to gain an upper hand. Even though Ryan Parry was brilliant in throwing down the stumps to run out a free scoring batsman, and Zack Robertson bowled economically in his spell(8 overs, 3 maidens, 1/20) to slow the run rate down, Aberfoyle Park were still in the game when they reached 3/111 with 10 overs remaining. A master move by captain Josh Spall saw him put on Tylor Mills who immediately had the opening batsman caught by Ryan Parry at mid-on and then Josh himself had another dangerous batsman LBW.
With some tight bowling, good catching and a third run out, Wirreanda rapped up the last 6 wickets for only 13 runs leaving Aberfoyle Park 30 runs behind. Ryan Parry had a good day in the field and with finished with 3/12, a catch and a run out.
This was a great game of cricket because both teams had a chance to win up until the 34th over.
Wirreanda now go into the last four in the competition.
