The Open team hosted Woodcroft College on Thursday 14th February. Charlie Hall-Coburn won the toss and chose for Wirreanda to bat first. Jason Horne and Jude Schirmer, who were both making their debuts for the Open team, opened the batting and fought their way through a tough period of 42 minutes before Jason made an error of judgement to be run out for 5. Jude was the next person out after he had compiled a solid 17 with a number of pushes and nudges through the gaps in the field. He was dismissed on his only error during his 60 minutes stay at the crease. Tyson Craigie was looking to make a good score after hitting a nice lofted drive over mid-on, but was caught and bowled by the catch of the day for 6. Charlie Hall-Coburn started really well but mis-judged a slower ball and hit a hook shot on to his stumps. He was out for 5. Matt McLean came to the crease with his newly acquired Kookaburra and was impressed by the sound of the ball hitting the middle of his bat. He made 5 before being bowled. Hayden Newman, also making his Open team debut, came to the middle in front of his Year 10 peers who were cheering support. He did not let them down by hitting a beautiful four, but then was out caught attempting the same shot. Llewelyn Wisman was next in and had the unfortunate situation of being dropped and caught off the same ball. He made 0. There was an expectation that Josh De Roode could help his brother Christiaan put together a family partnership and rescue the team. However he did not move his feet far enough and was adjudged LBW for 1. Christiaan was the next man out for 12 attempting a big hit. Cooper O’Reilly, who had been out of the cricket scene for a number of years, came to the crease with his sparkling blue Strikers bat that the opposition admired immensely. He made 3 before being bowled. Jaiden Tregloan was the last man in and he joins the exclusive ‘club’ of scoring a run from the first ball faced while playing for Wirreanda. He was 1 not out with the team finishing on a disappointing 71.

Given the small run chase, Woodcroft passed the score with no wickets down and finished the day on 1/162. The successful bowler was Charlie Hall-Coburn after Jason Horne took a magnificent catch at deep mid-off.

Although it was a tough day for all of the lads, they played the game in good spirits and were gracious in defeat.
Thank you to Jackie Newman who scored during this match, after retiring from her long stint of administrative work at the school.
